You can finally vote in polls (as long as you have an account) and you can read and post comments in the homebrew database (there is a page for each of my homebrew projects). So click that network button in the bottom right corner of the home menu and go discuss and vote on some junk. The actual site (the version you get when you visit it with a regular web browser) has gotten a few small updates tonight too.

You’ve probably noticed that a LOT of the links around here have died. To rectify that I’ve begun uploading all of my stuff to PlatonicRobot. You can now go there to find the most recent versions of everything I’ve ever released for Wii.

1bit Invaders v2.1 – Wii & Windows

Here’s a very small update for another somewhat old game of mine.

Enemies bump into one another now instead of just overlapping each other. The map is more then twice its previous size (so you can fly farther in any direction before the game starts to forget what the environment you left behind was like). Shooting walls makes larger holes. I removed the onscreen frame rate monitor. The movement speed of pretty much everything has been increased. I added background music (Slow Down by ccowley). I also added classic controller support (though I find it to be far better to play with a nunchuck and wiimote).

Its really not a note worthy update. The most significant thing is that there is now for the first time a PC version of the game.

1bit Invaders – Wii

1bit Invaders is a 2d free roaming space shooter with a fully destructible environment and retro monochrome graphics. To stay alive and gain points just shoot the circles before they reach your ship. Use the wiimote to aim, B button to shoot and the nunchuck analog stick to move.

This is actually the third time I’ve completely remade this game. Once back when I first messed around with wii homebrew using libwiisprite to render everything. I don’t think I ever posted that first one anywhere though I definitely recall taking photos of it running on my TV and posting them someplace. It was pretty cool and constantly scrolled to the right but you had different ways of effecting the speed that that happened and you didn’t naturally keep up with the speed of the camera so you would drift to the left side of the screen and it just generally had a really nice sense of motion. The second time (which is the version that is at the moment on the Homebrew Browser) I made this game I did it with SDL like I did this time but it turned out (in my opinion) really lame and was just a single screen thing. I’m happy with this third remake though. If/when I decide to do more of it I definitely think I’m going to build on this rather then starting fresh for a fourth time. Regardless I think I might post more about it at some future point in time. There is some mildly interesting shit about how it works.

Random cool thing: Along with making the wiimote shake when your hurt the screen also sorta shakes and freaks out and the red green blue layers that white is comprised of get shifted in different directions. I was going to mess up the screen in some other ways also but didn’t want to spend the time on it. I’m really happy with how that turned out but I’m kinda unsure how it will be received so let me know what you think of the effect.

1bit Invaders

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHLpEEAfLfE]

This is the beginnings of a 2D space shooter with destructible walls. You use the Wiimote to aim, the b button to shoot and the nunchuck analog stick to move. Shoot the round things that move towards you to survive and gain points. The wiimote vibrates when your being hurt. There is a lot left to be added and reworked but its functional at this point.

Along with having black and white monochrome visuals the sprites are also noticeably pixelated. I took the retro pretend low rez thing a lot less serious then I did with Pineapple Apocalypse RPG though. The sprites are even blockier but well Pineapple Apocalypse RPG stuck rigidly to its fake pseudo 320×240 resolution 1bit Invaders simply doesn’t. The sprites get placed at any appropriate position on screen and things move more smoothly then would be possible if everything was being actually rendered at the low resolution that the blocky sprites might suggest it is.
