Randomness

The NintendoMax Wii Dev Competition was extended for an additional 6 days to allow updates to be done in the same way that it was allowed for the GBAtemp Bounty. The six days are now up though for both competitions. I probably should have but I didn’t release any updates to any of my games during that time.

There is a video I haven’t posted yet of Hero City v0.4 running on Wii that you can find here. As usual it was provided by Cid2Mizard from NintendoMax who is still the only person creating video of homebrew games.

Mr. Reaper has made a Homebrew Channel theme that resembles his re skin of They Do Not Die. You can download the theme here and for anyone that doesn’t have it already you can find his TDND reskin here.

There is a game review of my GP2X version of Dont Get Crushed which can be found here at the the 2XGB blog. That is old news but 2XGB is definitely a site deserving of some recognition as it is possible the only one still actively being updated with original reviews and commentary about GP2X and what software is available for it.

I’ll probably have some “new” Wii homebrew ready to post tomorrow or the day after.

A final Hero City update and a multi competition entry

There are three hours left until midnight in my time zone meaning that there are three hours left until the NintendoMax Wii Dev Competition closes for me. There is also a 6 day grace period during which people competing in the GBAtemp Bounty can update their already submitted games. But the competitions are essentially closed.

Which means that I am (for the time being) done with the games I was working on for them. It is in a way a relief.

First though I finished up one final unplanned update to Hero City.

Now when you attack you can actually hurt and eventually defeat enemies. The movement of enemies and the way they turn and bump into each other and you has been smoothed out. Now you get points for defeating enemies and your high score is saved when you die. You also get experience points which are persistent (They don’t get reset to zero when you die). Your health regenerates now and when it goes down to zero you die and get sent back to the title screen. The file size is smaller. I fixed some little things.

I also added the required splash screen to the Wiii version of Cherophobe (which I had made for and had already entered into the GBAtemp bounty) and entered it into the NintendoMax competition. I wasn’t going to. I liked the idea of having games made specifically for each competition and only submitting them to one. But Cid2Mizard sent me a PM reminding me that it was allowed and considering how simple Cylinder Dodge is and how unpolished and incomplete Hero City remains it seemed like a good idea to get something comparatively more complete into the NintendoMax competition.

I’m curious to hear what people think of Hero City, Cylinder Dodge and all versions of Cherophobe.

Hero City v0.3 – Wii & Windows

Here is yet another small update to Hero City. The game is still incomplete but with the deadline being today it is unlikely that I will be making another update in time for the competition. I’m going to take a break from it for now but I think I’ll come back and finish it eventually.

I’ve added a simple skybox. Fixed up some things and improved performance a bit from the last version. The colors of the buildings are now randomized. The hero now has a cape and has been re textured to resemble the NintendoMax mascot. Flying and running have been moved to the Z button. Now you use energy (which automatically regenerates) when flying or running. You can now punch with the C and B buttons although you still cant actually harm the enemies.

Video provided by Cid2Mizard from NintendoMax.
You can find a screenshot of the game here.

Here is a very small update. More coming very soon.

I added a home menu. The cursor is a nice Wii style hand now. I edited the main characters texture to be a little bit less of a blatant Superman copy. Now there are multiple kinds of enemies. All of the enemies have walking animation. There is music now.

The background music used is La busqueda de IANNA background music by Epic Soul Factory.

Hero City v0.1 – Wii & Windows

Oh procrastination, why must you constantly slow my progress?

I started making this game ages ago but I haven’t been working on it as much as I could have. I haven’t really been doing much of anything lately. But with less then two weeks remaining before the Nintendomax Wii Dev Compo 2011 deadline I’ve begun working on it again. Its not yet really a game but I’m still hopeful that I will be able to finish it in time.

In Hero City you play as a superhero and fly around fighting monsters.

Use the nunchuck analog stick to move.
Use the wiimote pointer to turn.
Use the A button to jump, fly and run.

I’ll probably be changing the controls later and moving flying/running to their own button or buttons. There is a lot that will be changed as the game becomes more complete.
